Home About Us
The guys who founded Hydro Epic have spent a lifetime
sailing in both competition races and open ocean voyages. They share a
passion for surf and sea, and understand how objects interact with
waves. In their day jobs they were pilots, engineers, chemists and
designers.
It was in Laguna, CA, while working on his offshore ultra-light racing
sailboat that Mark Itnyre (a commercial airline pilot) first visualized
using materials from high performance boats and airplanes to make
surfboards. Mark thought he could make a more lively and responsive
surfboard by creating a super light, hollow board with a tough outer
skin using advanced composite materials like carbon fiber, Kevlar and
aircraft aluminum honeycomb. For two years, he experimented with an
array of material combinations and consulted with local surfers and
shapers. Mark teamed up with Pete Mehiel, a manufacturing/engineering
guy (and sailing buddy), who had successfully launched several
start-ups and built them into healthy businesses. With a little help
from their friends, they began to make finished prototypes which were
tested and refined by experienced surfers in southern California. After
two more years of development, our 9'1" high-performance longboard was
ready, and it launched Hydro Epic.
Today, Hydro Epic combines the artistry and experience of some of
the world's leading shapers with technologically advanced production
methods and materials. Top shapers know they could design surfboards
that perform better, but they are at the limit of their materials; foam
and glass. Hydro Epic's technology enables top shapers like Dick Brewer
to push the envelope in performance and durability.....and we're just
getting started!
Hydro Epic is committed to producing the finest quality high performance surfboards.
Our innovation joins the wisdom of legendary shapers with breakthrough technology - the ultimate blend of art and science.
